Speed

Speed

Why does everything need to go so fast today?

We drive too fast on the roads causing accidents. Accidents puts everything to a full stop. Waiting for the emergency service. Lives lost, long recovery for the survivors. For what! To save a few seconds by overtaking old aunt McDonald.

Speedy car

Banging that keyboard in frustration waiting for that site to load. Now we talk about seconds! Chasing deadlines. It must be ready by yesterday otherwise we loose business. We must produce faster with less people. Why? To accumulate more money, to buy that second luxurious car or boat. Most money when you die win!?

Does this need for speed makes us happy? Or do we try to outrun the darkness? There are only two things that are absolute in our life. We are born and we will die. The amount of time between those certainties we do not know, fortunately.

Why do we like go fast? Is it only the need to get from point A to B as fast as possible? Do we seek the thrill in speed? So many sports has speed as the indicator for success. Not only motor sport but also sports like downhill skiing. The risk of getting seriously injured or even to die seems to attract many.

Even a slow game like chess sometimes uses time as an indicator. Do we always need to appoint a winner? Do we bring this into our daily life where we compete to have a nicer car than our neighbor? If someone wins must there not be one or more looser?

For sure there are things that need speed. Saving that harvest before the rain, catching that train running on a timetable or emergency services responding to a call. But take some time to relax have a coffee or tea and just feel the world spinning, read a blog or a book. If your team does not meet that deadline the result might be even better!

Lagom

Lagom

This very special Swedish word does not have a translation in any other language. Google Translate suggests “Moderate” or “just right” and I think “just right” comes the closest. Not to hot and not to cold, just right. The portion of food is not to much, not to little, just right amount. His point of views are not to much right neither to left, somewhere in the middle.

If there is one word that defines Sweden as a nation this is it.

Swedish Flags

In Sweden it is very important to reach consensus when making decisions. All angles must be heard and preferably satisfied. Compromise is King! Not really the king, his name is Carl XIV Gustaf. But there is a compromise right there. We are a democracy so the king does not have any formal authority. This lays with the parliament, Riksdagen, and the government, Regeringen. It is written in to the constitution that “all power emanates from the people”. So basically the King is just a well paid PR guy. Both republicans and monarchists are equally happy and dissatisfied.

I have had many managers from the US going blue in their faces when they realize they cannot take a decision or fire someone without a negotiation with the Trade Unions. So these laws are created to have a balance of power (lagom) in business. We build high rise buildings but not skyscrapers. We have the largest middle class in the world.

There are three fat levels for milk, 0,5, 1,5 and 3%. Can you guess what the best selling level is? Yes you are correct, 1,5% Mellanmjölk, semi-skimmed milk. The highest selling coffee is Mellanrost, medium roasted. There was even a Mellanöl, medium alcoholic beer that was so popular they banned it and renamed it Folköl, Peoples beer.

Lagom number of cows!

Even if this has changed over the last ten or so years it still defines out way of life. Has this strategy been good or bad? I cannot tell but it has been well over 200 years since Sweden were at war. It is top fifteen richest countries in the world 2020, GNP per Capita. We have one of the largest middle class in the world. For sure there are problems and things we struggle with. Some will frown at this text and say we are to naive in many cases. But who is perfect?

Welcome to Sweden, the country of Lagom! We put a smile on your face, but not to big. Like, subscribe and please comment.

Nightmare

Nightmare

They come crawling at night. Piercing your brain. Waking up in a flood of sweat, gasping for breath.

Bad dreams, bad dreams. Thoughts that bring you down. Black dreams, black dreams. Nightmare after midnight.

Go back to sleep, counting sheep. Just before dawn. Black dreams behind your eyelids. Gasping for breath.

Bad dreams, bad dreams. Thoughts that bring you down. Black dreams, black dreams. Nightmare after midnight.

Stumbling to bed. Crying for sleep to come. But you fear the dark, fear your thoughts. Let it come, count the sheep.

No dreams, no dreams. Oblivion of sleep. Breathe hard, breathe hard. You will come out strong. Don’t be a loser, you are not a loser. Beat the dark, shine the light!

Painting

Painting

Today I painted a house. My sons house. Taking down the wood around the windows. Making sure it is well done. Well done to sustain the windy autumn and winters. Autumn and winter when rain comes down almost horizontally. Hammering against the windows and the trim boards.

The soothing strikes of the paint brush against the wood. Before and after are clear, simple. Protecting the wood against the forces of nature. Forces to reclaim, reclaim the wood. For now, and many years to come a shelter for my son. I cannot save him from his inner demons. But I can shelter him from the forces of nature.

Nature that we love so much. Offers recreation and keeps the demons away for a while. Walking the forest to pick mushrooms and watching the wild life. The birds, nightingale singing its lovely tune. The hawk screaming and fighting with the seagull trying to steal its eggs. Go out with the boat, just sitting there.

Painting, gently back and forth. Like I stroke my sons hair when he was a child trying to sleep, soothing. A layer of protection against everything that wears down. Around the windows always white. White as the gentle snow. Snow that muffles the noise. Painting a house, my sons house.

Burn Out

Burn Out

Stepping hard on the gas, burning that rubber. In a cloud of smoke, the smell of hot rubber. That guy he can go, scream, and shout, that is so cool. Away on the track, tires worn down and little grip. In the first corner he goes over, into the abyss of depression.

Light up that grill, lots of coal, let it burn. Party is on, smoking hot, the smell of success. That guy can party, scream, and shout, we want a piece. Time for you, time for you, time to eat, hard to breathe. Meat has been left to burn, nobody left, he goes to the cold floor of depression.

I got time, time for you, let me set it up. Piles of work, the buzz of keyboard punch and meeting calls. That guy can work, scream, and shout, we want a piece. Close that deal, finish that project, hard to think. Getting home there is nothing there, he goes to the closet of depressing emptiness.

Get off that floor, come on push, every muscle burns, burning to stop. Like a wet blanket depression weighing you down. Come on it is up to you, don’t be a loser and feel sorry for yourself. But the battery is flat, it is flat, set to Off. Depression took the charger!

At the Gym

At the Gym

For the first time in months I dared myself to the gym, where I have not been since the Covid-19 pandemic hit us in February. I like to go in the morning if I can as there is usually not many people training even in normal circumstances. Already in the parking lot you get an indication if the gym is crowded or not. It is a bit of a contradiction that many take the car to the gym to run on a treadmill indoors when we have so much nature all around us, but as I wrote in my blog about tourists it is a lethal hazard to run on our narrow roads even off season. In the gym there were only a few persons tormenting their bodies and only one on the treadmill making that special pounding noise. The gym owners had done their best to make it Corona safe by marking up for keeping safe distance, washing hands and disinfect machines after use. I decided to take the risk, change clothes and started to train. The muscles woke up from their dormancy with a big surprise so lifting the same weights as I did before was out of the question. Go easy on the weights and add more repetitions was the strategy. I use noise canceling headphones as I get very frustrated with the “work-out music” they pump out in the speakers at the gym. I prefer to listen the heavy metal, punk, blues or rock. Today’s playlist consisted of Social Distortion, Rise Against, Sum 41 and Mustasch. As everything takes a little longer waiting to make sure you keep the distance and disinfecting machines I started think about the stereotypes you see in the gym.

First there is the Pectoralis Major guy. He spend most of his time doing bench press, lifting under loud moaning so everyone can hear how heavy his lifting and how strong he is. He takes a stroll between every set flexing his muscles in the mirror and in front of the girls pretending to drink water, he might actually do, before he prepares the next set adding more weight to the bar by slamming them on for everyone to hear. He picks out a stranger to “save” him if he does not manage the last rep or better he has his mate, the other Biceps guy there cheering him on. “Come on, you can do it, push, push, a little more, yeah he shouts glancing to see if anyone is looking at the two Adonis!

Advertisements

You will find the Biceps guys in the corner, always a corner, with the dumbbells (according to Google translate dumbbells is also a synonym for idiot but I mean the weights). With the experienced guys their arms are twice the size as my tight. It is a bit scary to go there for the 12 kilo dumbbells when they use 24 kilos or higher. There is a mirror so you can sit there and admire your muscles flexing and the sweat poring from your forehead. Here it is a bit more discrete moaning, it is all about the visual. You very rarely see women here and then only if they can be there alone. I am always amazed with the ingenuity the display for new ways of working the dumbbells.

There is a clear Dress Code so let me say something about this also. The beginner can come with a used up T-shirt and some old training trousers and look a bit confused as they randomly tries out the machines. This type will probably still come after a few months but then with upgraded wardrobe. New Years Eve Promise type you will spot instantly in February with their new high fashion training gear, even if they leave a baggy sweatshirt over so to not show the love handles or trying to hide the beer belly. Why in February and not in January you may ask? They purchased their membership card the first week in January, this is when gyms take in 80% of their income for the year, then they find out that they has nothing to wear. So the next three weeks are spent in the sportswear shops falling for the salespersons every trick to spend more on the outfits and shoes than what the membership costs. The style changes as you train and the more successful you are the more skin is showing, or I might say muscles. The gym is a stage for the exhibitionists.

Advertisements

The Gym is My Living Room type spends most of their time in the gym not necessarily training. Talking to friends, all friends are at the gym, checking the phone for social media, friends in other gyms, and only occasionally do some lifting just to keep the seat. These guys have comfortable training clothes. The vending machine is their refrigerator where they can get a snack or a substitute for dinner in the training bars and energy drinks. Even if there are some fruit, banana and apples they never buy it.

We also see the Wellness type that is usually older and even retired. They like to train in the mornings like me! Yes, I fit into this category even if I still have a few years to retirement. Movements are slow but very effective, no time wasted watching the phone. Low weight, many reps and maximum of two sets. Often found by the water station talking memories or who was related to who in 1850 or something. The most enthusiastic ones combines memory talking with the exercise bike, slow low gear, got to save the breath for the talking. Before leaving they always squeeze in some complaints about the loud music and the bad smell of sweat.

Last we need to give some notice to the Efficient type. Like a phantom they sneak in, put their headphones on, noise cancelling, and with surgical precision performs his or hers program. No noise, no moaning, no slamming, just efficient training and suddenly before you even noticed their arrival they are gone again.

What stereotype fits you? Did I forget any type? Please let me know your thoughts by commenting. I hope I have not offended anyone, specially if you belong to the first two types. Check out my site for more posts https://ullehaddock.com/. If you like my writing please like and subscribe for more.

Photos

I wrote a post about how I like to take photos with my Mobile phone camera and I got a lot of likes from other bloggers that like photography. I have checked their blogs and tips with great joy. They have inspired me to look at the possible motives in a new way. So thank you https://wanderingambivert.com/, https://fotosbykarin.blog/ and everybody else. I hope you enjoy these pictures.

On the islands of the coast the wind is the most magnificent sculptor and since many of the islands are uninhabited and difficult to access there is very little human impact. Look at the pine to the left, it has found a place to grow in very little soil, stubbornly pushing its roots under the rock to find water. The tree to the bottom right is one of my favorites twisting so much it has grown over an old branch of the same tree. Even with many branches dead this tree is still alive standing on the west side of the island, a true survivor.

One of the tips was to use the portrait mode when taking scenic pictures and I have experimented a bit with it. It is a bit more difficult as you need to stand close to the object in foreground but as you see in pictures above the colors gets deeper when taking a picture in a very bright summers day by the ocean. I will keep experimenting and learn more even if my family sighs every time I stop to take a picture laying down or bending over backwards to get that perfect angle. If you like to follow my progress, or downfall, please like and subscribe. Tips and comments are most welcome!

A Car

A Car

One of my guiding stars for life is that you should learn something new every day or else the day has been wasted. So far in my life as a man in my prime age I have not yet wasted a day! One day my son and I realized we, or really me, are not very skilled in mechanics other than theoretically so we decided we need more practical experience. We started to browse the net for a “do it yourself car”. Budget was set to €1000 and soon we found it. A black Volkswagen Golf with 31000 kilometres on the display, a small car that does not use too much gas. After a short test drive and some bargaining we bought it for €700.

We soon realized that there was a large hole in the exhaust silencer and we hoped that is was not the first part with the catalyzer, it was! If you are not a garage owner and can lift up the car but are forced to rely on a jack and trestles you soon find out it is very tight under the car. Over one and half tonnes of car just 5 centimetres over your head makes you humble. We had very little clue on what to do so we had to go to YouTube for advise. Being a German built car the best instructions was in German, a language I struggle with a bit more than English. Thank you for the invention of video. We only had to use the angle grinder once but there was more use of the swearwords I must admit. No I will not teach you any Swedish swearwords here but leave a comment if you think I should write a piece on Swedish swearwords. To add more to this ordeal I had injured my back trying to salvage floating bridge that went A-wall in one of the winter storms. Stay tuned for that future blog.

Please note the extra safety measures in the left side of the picture.

Now the car was silent and driving it we soon realized it had a mind of its own, a soul or a ghost!? The door locks are really amusing. Most of the time the central locks works fine and locks all five doors but many times it only locks the drivers door. Drivers door is also the only keyhole that works with the only available key. Then you unlock and to try again to lock all doors except the drivers door locks, so you lock the drivers door and as you start to move away from the car all doors unlocks with a loud click. So you try again and the same thing all over again. Now we try to get in the car and start it up, get out and lock. Success! Okay, sort of. When you come out of the store you find that everything is unlocked except the drivers door. We are fortunate to live in a rural area with not much crime or car thefts. Put the key in the keyhole and everything locks. Finally you get in the car to drive away when the door locks only to unlock after a kilometre. A car with that much personality must have a name so he is now named Mulle Meck!

Wheels and tires are new!

One of the previous owners spent lots of money to put in a high quality stereo of the well known brand Denver. Listening to the radio is very interesting as is changes station randomly. Luckily we live in thinly populated area so there are not very many stations to tune in to but Denver tries them all six. There are four public service stations in Sweden and we can also, if the weather is good tune in to two local commercial stations. Public service station one offers news, debate and politics. The station two offers classical music and Denver seems to like this the most. I do not know if it is the same in other countries but the radio hosts presenting classical music has a very special tone. After the very bombastic symphony the host comes in in a very low monotonous voice explaining “this was the third symphony, second set and forth to fifteenth line in B-flat of Wolfgang Amendment Mollberg played by the philharmonic orchestra in Worchester-upon-a-hill conducted by Someone Somewonsky”. After that Denver quickly changes over to one of the commercial stations where a female singer is wailing away with just electronic drums as a backup. After a few minutes we realize that it is now a commercial for a local shopping mall.

When we start the car, it starts real easy, it makes a squeaky noise like it is saying “why did you wake me up?” “I am tired and old, just let me stand here in the parking lot and rust away”! You need to be very tender with it driving as the clutch has a very, I mean a very, short span from neutral to drive. If you need to start in a small slope you start to sweat as soon as you realize that will be the case. To find the pull position you need to work with surgical precision, for all you brain surgeons out there saying it is difficult wait until you try this clutch. I guess we need to change the clutch and that blog post will probably be liked by all motor heads if we succeed. Hope you enjoyed this true story, like and subscribe.

Thinking

Thinking

On the rock high above the water. Sitting and looking out over the bay. The rustle from the leaves in the breeze. My special place, so peaceful and calm wherever the wind comes from. In early spring I hear the eagle owl calling for its mate. Down in the water a pair of swans swims gently through the water. The swans stay together for life and work together to bring up their cygnets. Every year I see them having two but seldom see them grow to adults. Thinking of the worry you have for your children. Never stops even when they grow up. Going to university to live in the large city with all dangers, the noise.

Mrs Swan

On the rock high above the water. In the winter I see a family of moose cautiously move across the ice. It breaks and one of the calf’s goes into the ice cold water. Struggles to get up. The mother looks at him and calling. Calling to the other calf to go around, to the struggling one to fight. To far away to help. It goes under once, twice, disappears and like a miracle gets its head over the water and struggles to solid ice. Manages to climb up. I am standing up now and my pulse is rushing. Thinking of my own children, praying they will manage their way to adulthood.

On the rock high above the water. In the summer the bay is full of boats seeking shelter from the strong west winds. The smell of barbecue smoke filling the bay. Someone diving into the water from the deck. Scaring up the ducks that lifts of while making loud noise. The duck mother screaming hurry, hurry, danger, danger. The sun against my skin warming me. I am calm my son sits right beside me. No talking, just sitting, thinking.

Boats seeking shelter from the coming summer storm.

On the rock high above the water. The rocks carved and shaped by the ice, steep in one end and rounded in the other end. Rounded boulders left by the ice. Blue clay at the bottom of the bay left by the last melting ice thousands of years ago. Thinking of the people lived here since the rocks and narrow fields raised from the ocean bottom. The rich water bringing in the herring and bringing prosperity just to vanish again bringing starvation to the table. See the remains of stone-masonry. Cutting the red granite, men working in the hot summers day, in the cold cold north west snowstorm, in the rain falling almost horizontally with the south west wind. Working to provide for their children.

Stone masonry.

On the rock high above the water. Turn to the west where the storm is roaring over the shielding cliff. Thinking of the fishermen. Today struggling with rules and over fishing from floating industries. Going out in their small boats against the forces of nature. Not knowing if they will make it home. The sea provides and the sea takes back. Stories told of the old days when boats were forced to go out in harsh conditions and froze in the ice for months. Boats crushed against the cliffs caught in the storm and the dark. Many children waiting in vain for their fathers.

On the rock high above the water. My favorite place shielded from the wind in three sides. The gorge ends in a steep cliff with a 15 meter drop down to the bay. A place presenting the beautiful things in life. A sideline to watch natures drama and scenery all year around. A place to sort for a sheep thinking man.
