The Oak

Persistent oak tree
Driving roots down to
find water and soil
Move mountains
seeking the sky
Open the crack
in ancient armor
Driving the wedge out

I found this giant oak tree on a quite steep rock. The oak tree (Quercus petraea) can be up to 30 meters in Sweden and up to 45 meters in warmer climate. This oak is quite old judging from the size of the stem. The oak tree is very important for the bio diversity in the forest. In the past the oak wood was important resource for building ships and make barrels. Already the vikings used it to build ships. The Swedish king Gustav Wasa declared it royal in 1558 to secure lumber for the navy. The land owning farmers were not allowed to take down oak trees until 1875.
