Red like a signal flare
Red to reject
Red to attract
Red on the hoods
Red in the woods

This trumpet shaped lichen is sometimes called just that, trumpet lichen, Cladonia fimbriata in Latin. Why it is red on the top I can’t find anywhere. Please let me know if you have any information.
